How Esperline Works
A plain-English walkthrough of how Esperline independently verifies your wRVUs, code by code, against the CMS Physician Fee Schedule, and shows you what your work was worth.
The Calculation
An independent calculation, grounded in the standard.
Every CPT and E&M code has a wRVU value defined in the CMS Physician Fee Schedule, the federal document published each year by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It is the standard reference for productivity-based pay across U.S. healthcare. Esperline uses it to run an independent calculation of what your charges should have produced, in wRVUs and in dollars.
The calculation is straightforward, applied to a standard reference. Esperline runs it on your behalf, independent of your employer, and delivers the result in plain English, every code, every wRVU, every dollar, so you can be confident your work is producing the wRVUs you expect.
One note on scope. Esperline calculates the wRVUs tied to the charges billed under your own name. If you pool wRVUs with partners in a shared arrangement, or your production is credited to a group rather than to you individually, your statement and the modeler will not reflect those pooled totals. The calculation stays accurate and fully relevant for your individual billing, and your finance team can confirm how your pooled wRVUs are credited.
Esperline verifies the charges you submit. It cannot detect or assess missed charges, the codes that were never captured in the first place. If you believe your totals are lower than expected, the right step is to work with your billing and coding team to audit your charge capture.
The Process
Four steps to your verified statement.
Export your charge data from your EHR.
Your EHR generates a record of every CPT and E&M code you bill. Esperline needs that record, organized by date. Below are the most common paths for each major EHR platform, and what to do if you do not have direct reporting access.
Epic
From Hyperspace, open the Reports menu or Reporting Workbench and search for a report titled “Provider Productivity,” “Charges by Provider,” or “RVU Productivity by Date.” Set the date range to the month you want analyzed and export as CSV or Excel. The exact path varies by your organization’s Epic build; some health systems restrict reporting access to administrators.
Cerner (Oracle Health)
Use PowerInsight or your organization’s Cerner reporting portal. Look for a “Provider Charge Detail” or “Provider Productivity” report, set the date range, and export as CSV. Access is often gated behind administrator or compensation-team permissions.
athenahealth
From the Reports tab in athenaNet, open Custom Reports or Standard Reports and look for “Charges by Provider,” “Provider Productivity,” or a similar charge-detail report. Filter by date range and export to CSV or Excel.
Other EHRs (eClinicalWorks, NextGen, Allscripts, Practice Fusion, and more)
Each platform has its own reporting interface. Look for a “charges,” “productivity,” or “billing detail” report; CSV or Excel export is sufficient. If the report you need is not visible in your view, contact your EHR administrator.
If you do not have report access
Many employed providers cannot run reports in their EHR. This is common and is not a barrier to using Esperline. Contact your employer’s finance team, compensation administrator, or billing department and request a “charge detail report” or “provider productivity report.” Specify the exact month and year you want analyzed (for example, “May 2026”) and ask for it in CSV, Excel, or PDF format. Most employers can deliver this within one to three business days.

Your statement itemizes every CPT and E&M code you billed: a plain-English description, the quantity, its CMS wRVU value, the dollar amount that code produced, and your total for the month. Summary figures sit at the top: total wRVUs, expected value, and the conversion factor applied.
Every statement lands in your personal dashboard, organized by month and year, so your record stays in one place and easy to find as it builds over time. Open any statement to review it or download it as a PDF whenever you need it.
The Modeler
Model what comes next, on your own numbers.
Verification tells you what your work was worth. The production modeler, the second half of Esperline, helps you decide what comes next. Model dialing back to a lighter schedule, or reaching a higher productivity target, and see the projected change in wRVUs and dollars, calculated from your own code mix rather than a generic average.
It is a planning tool, not a promise. Everything below runs on figures you provide and on your own verified production, so the decision about what comes next stays yours.
The inputs you provide
The modeler does not guess. It projects from four things you supply, so every figure it returns is anchored to your specialty, your contract, and your own work.
Your benchmark figures
From your own specialty benchmark report, you enter the wRVU figures at each published percentile (for example the 25th, median, 75th, and 90th). Esperline uses these to build the productivity curve your projection rides along. Your figures stay private and are never compared against any employer or any other user.
Your reported percentile
The percentile your compensation report places you at today. This is your starting point on the curve, the baseline the modeler measures every change against.
Your conversion factor
Your contracted dollars-per-wRVU rate. It is prefilled from your profile, but you can adjust it right in the modeler, because a forward-looking projection may assume a different rate than a past statement did.
Your verified production
Your own code mix, taken from the statements you have already verified. This is what lets the modeler translate an abstract percentile change into the concrete encounters you actually bill.
Two ways to model a change
You choose the axis that fits the question you are asking, then drag a single control to model a different pace.
By percentile
Drag a target percentile along your benchmark curve, from well below your reported pace up to the top of the published range. Use this to model easing off to a lighter schedule, or moving up toward a higher target, and see where each pace lands.
By percent of productivity
Some providers already work above the top published percentile. This axis measures your pace as a percent of the 90th-percentile level, where 100 percent is the 90th, so you can model at and beyond it, up to a ceiling set by your own current production. It becomes available once you have entered a 90th-percentile figure.
What the modeler shows you
As you move the control, three things update together, so the answer to “what would that mean for me?” is always on screen.
Target versus your current pace
Two side-by-side figures: the annual wRVUs and dollars at the pace you are modeling, next to the annual wRVUs and dollars at your reported pace today.
The difference
The change between the two, stated plainly: dollars per year, wRVUs per year, and the percentage change. This is the headline the modeler exists to answer.
What it looks like in encounters
Holding your current code mix steady, the modeler translates the change into the codes you bill most: how many of each you handle now per year, how many at the modeled pace, and the difference. It turns a percentile into real visits.
The modeler is honest about its basis. Every projection notes that it is built from the benchmark figures you reported and your own production on file, annualizes gracefully when you have fewer than twelve months on record, and prompts you to refresh benchmark figures once they are more than eighteen months old. It shows what a change in pace could produce, so the choice stays yours.
Your History
Your verified record builds automatically, every month.
Every statement becomes part of your permanent, independent record. Esperline stores your monthly statements securely. You can open any prior statement from your dashboard at any time, and export your full history as a PDF whenever you want.
Three years in, you hold three years of independently verified wRVUs: what you billed and what that work was worth, month by month. That record is yours, and it is not available from any other source.
An Important Distinction
Esperline is a verification tool. It is not a legal instrument or an audit.
Esperline’s calculations applied to a standard reference, intended for your personal understanding of your own production. They do not constitute an audit of your employer, and they are not legal, tax, or financial advice. A difference between Esperline and your employer’s statement is not, by itself, a finding of underpayment or wrongdoing.
